Sometimes an opportunity knocks and you just gotta open that door! One of those opportunities actually went into my Spam folder in June of this year and nearly got missed! But thankfully, I always check my Spam folder before I do a mass Delete, and because I did, I was given the opportunity to collaborate with two awesome teams: The Yarnover Truck and Space Cadet Yarns!

The Yarnover Truck, which, if you're unfamiliar, is similar to the current food trend - food on trucks driving to specific locations and selling their wares - but with YARN! And their latest brain child is a collaboration Yarn Club with Space Cadet Yarns. In each Yarn Club box that arrives, you'll receive not only a skein of yarn, but both a knit and a crochet pattern, never before released, designed specifically for the colorway and base provided in the shipment. So cool, right?

Welp... I got to design for their second shipment, just last month! The Space Cadet base, Maia, was full of luscious, luscious bamboo and the colorway was inspired by Palm Desert. The end result was a simply shaped shawl, perfect for a bamboo-rich base, that highlights the colorways created by the dyer! This pattern is now live on Ravelry, HERE!

The Story

Whether it’s 11am or 11pm, you’re going to want to wear this Palm Desert inspired shawl with your favorite summer wardrobe. The lightweight fabric, created by a combination of eyelets and garter, in partner with a gorgeous bamboo-based fiber, is perfect for any time of day, and can be worn multiple ways: as a kerchief, shawled over your shoulders or even as a sarong cover-up for those pool side excursions. The simplicity of the pattern truly allows any variegated or multi-colored yarn to shine!

Materials

Space Cadet Maia (fingering weight; 80% bamboo, 20% superwash merino wool; 400 yds/100g per skein): 1 skein ‘Palm Desert’
US 4 (3.5mm) 32” circular needle (or preferred length)
Removable stitch marker (optional)

Finished Dimensions

55 inch wingspan by 14 inches tall (additional dimensions provided in the schematic on Page 3)

Gauge

23 sts and 48 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch after blocking

Notes

This shawl is an asymmetrical shape and worked flat. Written instructions are provided for the entirety of the shawl.
It is recommended to clip a removable stitch marker to the RS of the work to differentiate from the WS as this is a garter knit shawl.
Adjust needle size as necessary to match gauge.
This shawl best fits a 32” circular needle however the user may substitute longer or shorter needles for comfort.
Although gauge is not critical for this project, a looser gauge than noted will result in the use of more yardage. The pattern, while written for a 400 yd skein of yarn, also includes instructions on how to use the maximum amount of yardage in any size skein of fingering weight yarn.
