Confession time... I have 47 (FORTY SEVEN!!!!) single skeins of fingering weight yarn in my stash right now. Ugh... I can't even handle that. It sounds nuts. To be fair, I've amassed it over 5 years but still...

Here's how I soothe myself when I berate myself for so much un-planned yarn: I remind myself that I'm not alone in single-skein heaven! We all (ok, MOST of us) are suckers for beautiful, fingering weight hand-dyed yarn. We buy it by the basket-full at shows and don't often have a plan for it. Well... here's My Simple Solution for those gorgeous skeins that deserve to be shown off (and if you can't bear to knit another pair of socks... *wild, hysterical laughing* there's always room for more socks).

MY SIMPLE SOLUTION

One more confession? I'm a total TV knitter. I don't like fussy knits and want something that helps calm my mind after a busy day at the computer. This single-skein, asymmetrical shawl is just that for me. There is a rhythm to the knitting that soothes my soul and allows the yarn to absolutely sing!

The Details

My Simple Solution is knit from tip to bind off edge where you add a bit of pizzazz with an adorable picot bind-off. The final dimensions of the shawl will depend whether you match gauge and how much yarn you actually use (i.e.: does your fingering skein have 400 yds, 380 yds or even 463 yds - some will go further than others). Whatever the case, this shawl is designed to use the maximum amount of yardage in your skein to give you the biggest bang for your yarn-y buck!

MATERIALS

KiwiPop Yarn Snazzy Pop (fingering weight; 80% superwash merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon; 435 yds / 398 m per 3.5 oz / 100g), 1 skein: ‘Midnight Beach’
US 6 (4 mm) 32” / 81 cm circular needle
Row counter (optional)
Tapestry needle
Yarn/kitchen scale (to measure final grams of skein for the picot bind off)

FINISHED SIZE

66” / 167.5 cm width along top edge, 14“ / 35.5 cm depth from top edge to bottom point (will vary somewhat based on yardage in skein)

PROJECT GAUGE

22 sts and 36 rows = 4” / 10 cm over stitch pattern, worked flat, taken after blocking

NOTES

This asymmetrical shawl is worked from the top right point, and increases in width along the top edge every WS row.
This pattern includes written instructions only.
Gauge is not critical for this project - we simply want a single skein to go as far as possible! You will use up all but 5 g of the skein knitting the shawl, reserving the final 5 g for the picot bind off.
